Experimental Typography
There was a class called experimental typography that once made me feel overwhelmed. When learning design, we are always follow some design rules, but it is these rules that limit our thinking. However, this course is pushing us to break the rules, as shown in this set of exercises on the left. Our purpose is to boldly do experiments with words. I chose some scenes from my favorite movie “La La Land”, and integrated the lines and lyrics from the movie into the scenes. I tried my best to make the still images and text come alive, and I also hoped to bring the audience into the atmosphere and emotion of each scene.
By continuing to experiment with letters, I brought out the flat letters on the screen. I used the lyrics of “City of Stars” from “La La Land” as an experiment and named this group of typeface experiments “in-out-in”. I boldly displayed each piece of lyrics with different materials, and then processed it digitally and then made it by hand, changing it repeatedly, and finally got a unique effect. I used unexpected materials such as ice cubes, needles and threads, flowers, glue guns, etc. to keep the whole creative process open-minded.
